Abstract

Parathyroids glands play a key role in calcium homeostasis. This chapter reviews the embryology, anatomy and physiology of the parathyroid glands with special consideration of hyperparathyroidism and the development of the parathyroid gland and nearby structures as they relate to parathyroidectomy and the potential risks and complications of parathyroid surgery.
