Zusammenfassung
Das Leitbild der nachhaltigen Entwicklung hat sich politisch etabliert. Mehrere der 17 Sustainable Development Goals, die die Vereinten Nationen im Herbst 2015 beschlossen, haben direkte Relevanz für die Bioökonomie. Vor allem darf die Bioökonomie nicht in Konkurrenz zur Lebensmittelproduktion treten. Weltweit muss sie effizient, gerecht und schonend mit den knappen Ressourcen von Land und Wasser umgehen. Sie soll zur Bekämpfung des Klimawandels beitragen, ist aber nicht per se klimaneutral. Sie darf die Biodiversität nicht gefährden. Denn der Verlust biologischer Vielfalt ist eine der großen globalen Umweltbedrohungen. Sie soll ferner die Wertschöpfung steigern und insbesondere im ländlichen Raum wohlfahrtssteigernd wirken. Dieses Kapitel schildert diese Bedingungen einer nachhaltigen Bioökonomie, benennt die damit einhergehenden Zielkonflikte und verweist auf die Notwendigkeit einer starken globalen Governance, um belastbare Nachhaltigkeitskriterien umzusetzen.
