Versagt die konventionelle Atemunterstützung, können extrakorporale Lungenersatzverfahren eingesetzt und gleichzeitig eine »lungenschonende« Beatmung unter Vermeidung hoher Atemwegsspitzendrücke, hoher Atemhubvolumina und hoher inspiratorischer O2-Konzentrationen durchgeführt werden (»Ruhigstellung der Lunge«).
