Abstract

The development of experimental methods to investigate frictional processes on the atomic scale and numerical simulation methods has heralded in a drastic growth in the number of studies in the area of friction of solid bodies on the atomic scale. A simple model, known as the “Tomlinson model,” can be used as the basis for many investigations of frictional mechanisms on the atomic scale.
