Zusammenfassung
Wie die Zelle oder der Organismus sind auch die höheren Kategorien der belebten Natur, die Ökosysteme, durch beständigen Aufbau und Abbau gekennzeichnet. Die treibende Kraft des Stoffumsatzes ist hier wie dort die irreversible Umwandlung von freier Enthalpie (Sonnenenergie) in Entropie (Wärmebewegung der Materie). Der Ort der ökologischen Stoffumwälzung ist die Biosphäre, eine im Vergleich zu den Abmessungen der Erdkugel hauchdünne Schicht von allenfalls 20 km Mächtigkeit an den Kontaktzonen von Litho-, Hydro- und Atmosphäre.
