Abstract
The cornerstone of arthroscopy performed for diagnosis or treatment is good visualization and palpation of the intra-articular structures to establish an accurate diagnosis, make the treatment strategy, and work on the target site without damaging the surrounding tissues. Key determinants of effective arthroscopy include thorough knowledge of not only the most widely used portals but also of all other possible portals, selection of the approach according to the disorder to be treated, use of appropriate equipment, and stringent adherence to surgical principles.
