Abstract
An accurate clinical examination of patients suffering from rotator cuff tears is of utmost importance and can already lead to the diagnosis. Specific clinical tests for the various parts of the rotator cuff are described in order to evaluate muscle function or disability. Imaging tools are described with several parameters to be highlighted, which are in direct association with rotator cuff tears. Radiological parameters associated with the development of cuff tears are described and MRI changes related to chronic tears with prognostic and therapeutic meaning. Finally, classification systems are presented regarding partial and full-thickness tears, tear size, tendon retraction, tear shape configuration, muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration.
