Abstract

This chapter describes the properties of most of the potential thermoelectric materials. Bismuth and its alloys with antimony are useful at low temperatures in both thermoelectric and thermomagnetic energy convertors. Lead telluride and its alloys with other IV–VI compounds are used in generators at intermediate temperatures. So also are silicon–germanium alloys. Newer materials include the skutterudites, the clathrates and the half-Heusler alloys. There are also a number of oxides and silicides that have promising properties. Some organic conductors are becoming tantalisingly close to being worthwhile contenders. All these and some other compounds are discussed.
