Abstract

This chapter deals with the theory of the transport properties of solids. Conduction by electrons is formulated using energy bands and the concepts of effective mass and positive holes are introduced. The theory makes use of Fermi–Dirac statistics and the degenerate and non-degenerate approximations. A distinction is drawn between the properties of metals, insulators and semiconductors. The important effects that appear when both electrons and holes are present are discussed. Transport of heat by the lattice vibrations is considered and the idea of phonons is introduced. The phenomenon of phonon drag , associated with the interaction between the charge carriers and the lattice vibrations, is mentioned.
