Abstract
Our bodies have special sensory pain receptors that can recognize impending or existing tissue damage. These nociceptors are located at the ends of the thin A and C fibers in all organs except for the central nervous system. Pain stimuli first travel through these fibers to the wide dynamic range neurons (WDRs) in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord where they are then transmitted to the brain via intermediate-type neurons called interneurons.
