Surgery of the Meniscus

Abstract

This chapter describes the functional physiology and biomechanics of the menisci, starting with a description of the structures’ morphology. The mechanical properties of meniscus tissue are then discussed, with the differences between compressive and tensile strength highlighted. The various meniscal ligaments are then explained, leading into the functional biomechanics of the menisci: what purpose do they serve and how do they achieve that. Finally, injury and repair of the menisci are described.
