Abstract
So far in just 13 years of the twenty-first century, we have seen a full range of man-made and natural disasters. Climate change [1, 2] has been implicated in the severe weather responsible for floods in England and Wales [3] and India [4] and hurricanes on the Atlantic coast of the United States [5] but still more worrying is the effect of climate change on more chronic weather patterns affecting the monsoon rainfall and rice crop in India [6] and droughts occurring across sub-Saharan Africa expanding the desert further south [7].
