Zusammenfassung
Palliativmedizin/Palliativversorgung ist ein Ansatz zur Verbesserung der Lebensqualität von Patienten und ihren Familien, die mit Problemen konfrontiert sind, welche mit einer lebensbedrohlichen Erkrankung einhergehen. Dies geschieht durch Vorbeugen und Lindern von Leiden durch frühzeitige Erkennung, sorgfältige Einschätzung und Behandlung von Schmerzen sowie anderen Problemen körperlicher, psychosozialer und spiritueller Art (WHO 2004). Ziel jeder palliativmedizinischen Behandlung ist es die Symptome des Patienten auf ein möglichst erträgliches Maß zu reduzieren. Dabei spielt eine verständliche und angemessene Kommunikation mit dem Patienten und seinen Angehörigen die zentrale Rolle. Oft kann ein sensibel geführtes offenes Gespräch bei Zukunftssorgen oder einer problematischen Krankheitsverarbeitung mehr erreichen als der Einsatz von Pharmaka.
