Zusammenfassung
Volkszählungen in aller Welt zeigen, dass die Bevölkerung altert und dass sich dieser Trend auch im 21. Jahrhundert fortsetzen wird. Die Anzahl von Krebsneuerkrankungen korreliert mit dem Alter und zeigt in Kombination mit einer steigenden Anzahl von älteren Menschen die Notwendigkeit, medizinische Empfehlungen zur Krebsvorsorge zu geben, die Erwachsene mit einem Alter von über 70 inkludieren. Obgleich unterschiedliche Leitlinien mit allgemeinen Empfehlungen für das Krebsscreening existieren, werden viele spezifische Interessenfragen älterer Patienten nicht adressiert. Dieses Problem ist paradox: obwohl die Krebsrate bei älteren Patienten steigt, bedeutet dies nicht, dass ein Routinescreening empfohlen oder sogar angebracht ist, da schwere Begleiterkrankungen und eine begrenzte Lebenserwartung mehr Schaden als Nutzen bei dem zu untersuchenden Patienten verursachen könnten. Es ist daher wichtig, den individuellen Gesundheitszustand, die Lebenserwartung und das Verständnis des persönlichen Nutzens bei Screeningverfahren zu betrachten.
