Zusammenfassung
AD(H)S hat zum einen eine hohe genetische Komponente, zum anderen zeigen sich Zusammenhänge zu Variablen wie Geburtsgewicht und Gestationsalter bei der Geburt (Frühgeburten sind stärker betroffen), Familienstand (Kinder alleinerziehender sind stärker betroffen) oder Sozio-ökonomischer Status (ärmere Familien sind stärker betroffen) und Ausmaß an Stress in der Familie, ebenso wie möglicherweise auch zu Ernährung. Da empirische Studien einerseits zeigen, dass die Diagnose von ADHS stark variiert und mit unterschiedlichen sachfremd erscheinenden Faktoren kovariiert, und da sich empirisch gezeigt hat, dass die Verhaltenstherapie, wenn sie konsistent angewandt wird, sehr wirksam sein kann, lautet die Standardempfehlung, Medikamente nur als Therapie zweiter Wahl einzusetzen. Allerdings ist die stringente Umsetzung verhaltenstherapeutischer Überlegungen zwingend, will man so genannte „Selbstmedikation“ verhindern. Hier können Lehrkräfte segensreich wirken, wenn sie die Grundzüge der „Pädagogischen Verhaltensmodifikation“ beherzigen.
