Zusammenfassung
„E pluribus unum – Aus vielen Eines“: Dieser Leitspruch auf dem Siegel der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, der sich ursprünglich auf den Zusammenschluss der Einzelstaaten zu einer politischen Union bezog, wird in der Gegenwart zunehmend auch als Metapher für die amerikanische Gesellschaft verstanden, die über den traditionellen Antagonismus zwischen einer weißen Bevölkerungsmehrheit und einer lange Zeit diskriminierten afroamerikanischen Minderheit hinaus seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts immer mehr einen multiethnischen Charakter mit all den damit verbundenen Problemen und Herausforderungen angenommen hat. Das folgende Kapitel versucht diesen Prozess nachzuvollziehen sowie seine Ursachen und Folgen zu diskutieren.
