Zusammenfassung
Es ist das weite Land mit seinen unermesslich erscheinenden Distanzen, das von außerhalb oft als das charakteristischste Erscheinungsbild der USA erachtet wird und das auch die amerikanische Bevölkerung selbst als tragendes Fundament ihrer Gesellschaft wahrnimmt (vgl. Kap. 3). „The Land“ – ob konkret als „ranch land“, „farm land“ oder Immobilienbesitz, oder symbolisch als Wegmarke der nach Westen vordringenden Siedlungsexpansion – besitzt einen besonderen sozialen Stellenwert und wird bei vielen Gelegenheiten als konstitutiv für das US-amerikanische Selbstverständnis gefeiert und bisweilen moralisch regelrecht überhöht dargestellt. Das Wohnen auf dem eigenen Stück Land gilt als anerkannter Standard, und die klaren Demarkationen auch scheinbar ungenutzten Territoriums („wilderness“) unterstreichen diese Einstellung ebenso wie die alltagssprachliche Verwendung von „land“ bis in den städtischen Kontext hinein: So ist etwa der Vermieter oder Hausbesitzer bis heute ein „landlord“ geblieben. Diese emotionale Nähe zu Land, ländlichem Raum und auch das daraus ableitbare Bemühen, die Natur zu bewahren und zu schützen, läuft seit mindestens eineinhalb Jahrhunderten konträr zur Lebenswelt der Amerikanerinnen und Amerikaner, die seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts durch sich immer weiter ausdehnende Städte und Stadtlandschaften geprägt wird, in denen bereits seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts mehr als die Hälfte der Bevölkerung lebt. Die Urbanisierung, also das Wachstum der Städte in Zahl und Fläche, hat Amerika grundlegend transformiert und dem Mythos von „land“ (und „real estate“, also dem „wirklichen, echten Vermögen“) eine komplementäre Welt der Stadt hinzugefügt, die ihrerseits das Bild der USA so erfolgreich steuert, dass oft von einem „Stadtland“ USA die Rede ist. Allerdings ist der Boom dieses „Stadtlands“ mancherorts schon seit längerer Zeit an seine Grenzen gelangt, und in vielerlei Hinsicht sind Amerikas Städte mit Krisen konfrontiert und vom Niedergang betroffen. Wo liegen die eigentlichen Entwicklungsmotoren der Städte, wo die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Strukturprobleme, die das Bild vieler Städte prägen? In diesem Kapitel wird ein Überblick über die Anfänge der Stadtentwicklung in den USA gegeben, der Boom der Industriestadt zur American Metropolis beschrieben und die aktuellen Wandlungen im Kontext von Postfordismus und Postmoderne analysiert, bevor einzelne aktuelle Entwicklungsmuster in den Folgekapiteln weiter vertieft werden.
