Zusammenfassung

Im Jahre 1985 erschien in einem Sammelband zur jüngeren Einwanderung in die USA eine Arbeit mit dem Titel „Asian Americans: From Pariahs to Paragons“, und in der Tat beschreibt dieser Wandel von „Verachteten“ zu „Vorbildern“ sehr treffend den Weg, den die Einwanderer aus Asien nicht nur in der Wahrnehmung der amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch hinsichtlich ihres sozialen und ökonomischen Status innerhalb der Gesellschaft zurückgelegt haben. So gelten die Asiaten aufgrund ihres zum Teil bemerkenswerten Bildungsstandes und ihres wirtschaftlichen Erfolges heute vielfach als Model Minority, die den „amerikanischen Traum“ exemplarisch zu realisieren vermochte. Das nachfolgende Kapitel soll die Geschichte und die aktuelle Situation der Asiaten in den USA aufzeigen und das Bild der Model Minority einer kritischen Prüfung unterziehen.
