Abstract
On April 23, 1968, the “Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung” (GMD, Society for Mathematics and Information Technology) was founded within the grounds of the Birlinghoven castle in Sankt Augustin near Bonn, at that time the capital of Western Germany.
