Abstract

Carl Adam Peter Petri was born on July 12, 1926, in Leipzig, Germany. The name can be traced back to a Swedish ancestor, Olof Pettersson (1493–1552), who latinized his name to Olaus Petri. Olaus Petri is considered to be one of the most important pioneers of the protestant reformation in Sweden. In the sixteenth or seventeenth century a branch of the family emigrated to Germany. Many of Carl Adam’s ancestors were protestant pastors in northern Germany. This line of ancestors also explains the spelling of the first name Carl with C, which in contrast to normal German spelling with K, is very common in Sweden.
