Abstract
As explained in Chapter 1, this book is concerned with higher-order notions of computability, and particularly with computable operations of finite type over the natural numbers. In this chapter, we briefly survey the subject’s development from a historical perspective, as a complement to the more conceptually oriented overview of Chapter 1. Readers interested in a more comprehensive account of the subject’s history up to around 2000 should consult the surveys by Longley [178] and Normann [215].
