Abstract

The currently well-established concept of sciatica due to lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration is the result of a long historical evolution whose various stages in thinking and exploration are the focus of this brief historical review.

Editor’s Note

In this chapter, Gusmão et al. retrace, in conversational style, the evolution of medical thought and practice that ultimately led to the field of sciatica in the context of lumbar degenerative disk disease. This fascinating account is unique in both historical and clinical perspectives.
