Abstract
The Sun, as the parent star for the Solar System, holds special significance among all the stars in the Galaxy. We are keenly interested in its origins not only as they relate to the past history of the Solar System, but as they might shed light on how those events could have influenced the evolution of the one planetary system that we are certain supports life. This chapter reviews the main properties of the Sun as a star, and considers whether and how those properties might have affected the development of the properties of our planetary system. In particular, we consider what constraints can be placed on the Sun’s birthplace and whether any of its siblings might be identified as travelling companions in the Solar Neighbourhood.
