Abstract

Star formation in the halo ceased \({\sim }12\) billion years ago. Since then, star formation has largely been confined within the gas-rich Galactic disc, the dominant baryonic component of the Milky Way. This chapter discusses what we can learn about the subsequent star formation history from analysis of the characteristics of the present stellar populations. In particular, we consider the potential role played by the enigmatic ‘thick disk’ component, first identied some thirty years ago.
