Zusammenfassung
Bei der Glandula pinealis oder Epiphyse handelt sich um eine endokrine Drüse, die das lichtgesteuerte Melatonin produziert. Melatonin (N-Acetyl-5-methoxytryptamin) ist ein Hormon, das aus Tryptophan entsteht und für zirkardiane Rhythmen verantwortlich ist. Die Glandula pinealis erinnert an die Form eines Zapfens der Zirbelkiefer und befindet sich im Epithalamus, an der Hinterwand des dritten Hirnventrikels oberhalb der Vierhügelplatte. Ihre Größe entspricht ungefähr der eines Reiskorns (5-8 mm). Histologisch gesehen besteht die Glandula pinealis hauptsächlich aus Pinealozyten (die Melatonin produzieren) sowie folgenden anderen Zellen: interstitiellen Zellen, perivaskulären Phagozyten sowie pinealen Neuronen. Die Hauptinnervation ist sympathisch aus dem Ganglion cervicale superius.
