Abstract
Candidosis is a common opportunistic fungal infection caused by several Candida species and Candida albicans is often associated with oral infections. It has been described as an important disease that affected the oral cavity of a significant population percentage. Oral candidosis may present several clinical types and the pseudomembranous or “thrush”, as is popularly known, is one of the most recognized. According to some authors, pseudomembranous candidosis can be classified as acute or chronic infection. The objective of this chapter is to present important and current data regarding the epidemiology, etiology, clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria, and biological behavior of acute and chronic pseudomembranous candidosis.
