Abstract

An epiphrenic diverticulum is a herniation of a pouch of esophageal mucosa thought the musculature of the thoracic esophagus within 10 cm of the esophagogastric junction. The pathological process is thought to be the application of pulsion forces to the mucosa above a functionally obstructing region of abnormal esophageal motility. Investigations include endoscopy, contrast esophagogram and esophageal manometry. Operative interventions include laparoscopic, thoracic and thoracoscopic approaches in order to excise the diverticulum with a myotomy to address the underlying motility disorder.
