Zusammenfassung
Quellen sind klassische Ökotone (Grenzlebensräume). Sie sind durch stabile Verhältnisse im Grundwasser, das sie speist, geprägt, ihr besonderer Charakter entsteht jedoch im Wechselspiel mit Vegetation, Bodenbeschaffenheit und Klima um den Austrittsbereich. Wir betrachten ihre grundlegenden Besonderheiten, auch im Unterschied zu anderen grundwassergeprägten Lebensräumen, und die Faktoren, die zur jeweils starken Individualität einzelner Quellen führen. Mit ihrer eigentümlich zusammengesetzten, an besonders angepassten Spezialisten reichen Lebewelt leisten sie einen besonderen Beitrag zur regionalen und überregionalen Artenvielfalt. Zugleich sind sie durch räumliche Isolation und geringe Ausdehnung in der Fläche besonders sensible und störungsanfällige Elemente in der natürlichen Umwelt. In vielen Teilen der Erde existieren keine naturnah erhaltenen Quellen mehr oder sie sind auf kleinste Reliktvorkommen reduziert. Aber auch im wasserreichen Mitteleuropa bestehen erhebliche Defizite in ihrer Erforschung und Pflege.
