Abstract

This introduction provides a brief insertion into the background of various initiatives involving the promotion of issues relating to women in the UN, IMO and the maritime industry. It then presents an overview of the second Maritime Women: Global Leadership conference hosted by IMO and World Maritime University on the 31st to the 1st of April, 2014. Finally, the introduction serves as a preamble to the five parts of this book, firstly elaborating on historic and contemporary issues related to the various parts, where after a brief presentation is given of the papers adhering to the respective part.
