Abstract

The Neoarchean Yishui Complex locates in the eastern margin of the Western Shandong Complex, which is an important component of the Precambrian basement of the Eastern Block of the North China Craton. High-grade metamorphic supracrustal rocks and granitoids comprise the majority of the Yishui Complex. LA-ICP-MS zircon U–Pb dating and Hf isotopic analyses on various lithological units of the Yishui Complex have been carried out in this study and the results therefore provided new insights into the Neoarchean crustal evolution history of the Western Shandong Complex in the Eastern Block of the North China Craton. New zircon dating results reveal that the magmatic precursors of the supracrustal metapelites and TTG gneisses were generated during 2.58–2.53 and 2.53–2.52 Ga, respectively, and the charnockites were emplaced contemporaneously around 2.58–2.53 Ga. The metamorphic zircons and overgrowth rims document consistent metamorphic ages at ~2.50 Ga, suggesting the Yishui Complex experienced a regional granulite facies metamorphism at the end of the Late Neoarchean. Inherited detrital zircons also yield ages from 3.0 to 2.60 Ga and reaching peaks at 2.7–2.6 Ga, indicating an Early Neoarchean magmatism occurred in the Yishui area. Hf isotopic compositions show that the Late Neoarchean zircons have positive ε Hf(t) values from +1.6 to +7.1, with depleted mantle model ages of 2.78–2.59 Ga close to their crystallization ages. This suggests a significant crustal growth period and the Neoarchean crust was predominantly derived from juvenile crustal sources with weak contributions of older crustal materials. Combined with previous available data from the Western Shandong Complex, it is concluded that the Neoarchean is an important crust growth period in the Western Shandong Province, and the Late Archean widespread tectonothermal event is possibly related to a mantle plume activity, which have been favored for other Archean basement complexes in the Eastern Block of the North China Craton.
