Abstract

Endometrial polyps are frequent findings during the evaluation of women suffering from abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). Endometrial polyps are also frequently detected in women without such symptoms. The widespread use of transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) and saline infusion sonography (SIS) during gynaecological examination will most likely lead to the diagnosis of endometrial polyps in an increasingly number of asymptomatic women in the future. Consequently, the management of endometrial polyps seems to be a growing clinical issue.

In this chapter, the pathogenesis, diagnosis, symptomatology and treatment of endometrial polyps are described. Furthermore, the risk of malignancy in endometrial polyps is discussed. Finally, clinical guidelines for the treatment of endometrial polyps in pre- and postmenopausal women with or without symptoms are provided.
