Abstract

The position of the stomach below the diaphragm in the left upper abdomen is physiologically relatively constant. However, the shape of the stomach is quite variable. Thus, the definition of normal anatomy is difficult. The typical appearance of the stomach is influenced by neighbouring organs, by the tonus and the position of the greater curvature, as well as the filling state of the intestines in general. In addition, the appearance differs with body position (upright or supine). Name and definition of different parts of the stomach is not consistently used in the literature. The division according to the anatomical nouns with fundus, corpus ventriculi, prepyloric, pylorus and the ostium cardiacum is most commonly used to describe anatomic regions of the stomach. In addition, the incisura angularis is also described and referred to as the fundus angle.
