Abstract

The liver produces 0.5–1.5 litres of bile daily, which consists of 97% water, 1% bile acids, 0.7% calcium salts, and 0.1% each of bilirubin, phospholipids, and cholesterol. Bile capillaries collecting bile secreted by hepatocytes carry bile from the centre of the liver lobule to the periphery and continue into the interlobular ductules, which belong to the portal triad.
