Abstract
A Prehistory of Polymer Science ended with Hermann Staudinger well ensconced at Freiburg and basking in the success of the Faraday Discussion on Polymerization [1]. But better days were not ahead. Most of his best collaborators were either going or gone. The conditions in Germany were not going to get better and all scientists were expected to serve the German war machine. Staudinger’s reward for his “service” in the War was that his Institute was badly damaged. After a huge effort to rebuild his Institute, he retired in 1951.
