Zusammenfassung
Unter plötzlichen Todesfällen versteht man den Tod innerhalb von 24 h nach Auftreten von Krankheitssymptomen. Spezielle Fallgruppen sind Todesfälle am Arbeitsplatz, im öffentlichen Gewahrsam, im Straßenverkehr, beim Sport, während der Schwangerschaft, im Krankenhaus und in der ärztlichen Praxis. Plötzliche Todesfälle bei kardiovaskulären Grundleiden stehen dabei im Vordergrund. Neben der klassischen Morphologie spielen heute auch molekularbiologische Techniken für die Klärung der Todesursache eine Rolle („molekulare Autopsie“). Postmortal-biochemische Untersuchungen) sind von Bedeutung bei funktionellen Todesursachen. Der plötzliche Kindstod ist definiert als plötzlicher Tod im Säuglingsalter, der nach Überprüfung der Vorgeschichte, Untersuchung der Todesumstände und den Ergebnissen der Obduktion ungeklärt bleibt. Er ist eine wichtige Differenzialdiagnose zu spurenarmen gewaltsamen Todesfällen.
