Fascia, Nerve Supply, and Lymphatics of the Breast

Abstract

The author describes the anatomy of the fascia, ligaments, nerve supply, and lymphatics of the breast area. The fascia and ligaments help to support the youthful breast but loosen and stretch with age, pregnancy, and lactation. The inframammary crease as a support structure is frequently disrupted with breast augmentation surgery. Surgery around the areola may disrupt the sensory portion of the nipple-areola complex. Knowledge of the structures helps the surgeon to avoid injury to areas of the anatomy that may result in poor aesthetic outcome and patient dissatisfaction.
