Aesthetic Surgery of the Breast

Abstract

Symmastia is defined as an abnormality of the breasts where the breast mounds unite at the presternal region, elevating the presternal skin and causing the vertical intermammary sulcus to decrease in depth or disappear completely. There may be just a small bridge horizontally between the breasts, or there can be total union. The author discusses the diagnosis, etiology, and classification of symmastia and the management of congenital and acquired symmastia.
