Abstract
Effective weed control has always been one of the central problems in agriculture. With the increase in the size of farm units and the drop in the number of workers, herbicides have rendered a substantial contribution to the rationalization of agriculture. Cereal production and sugar-beet farming are given as examples to demonstrate the interactions which occur between agricultural-economic methods and ecological effects. Negative implications for the lasting productivity of the soils are not to be expected yet economic problems may arise in countries where a high percentage of the population is still occupied in agriculture.
