Zusammenfassung
Zu Beginn unseres Jahrhunderts hatte die Lehre von der Monomorphie der Bakterien endgültig über die pleomorphistischen Vorstellungen älterer Autoren gesiegt. Individuen, die von der klassischen Stäbchen- bzw. Kokkenform abwichen, wurden allgemein als Involutionsformen aufgefaßt, die mehr oder weniger rasch zugrunde gehen und auf keinen Fall in dieser aberranten Form unbegrenzt vermehrungsfähig sind. Freilich fehlte es nicht an Stimmen, selbst sehr angesehener Mikrobiologen, die über recht komplizierte Entwicklungscyclen (z. B. Symplasmatheorie von Löhnis) und sogar Artumwandlungen und spontane Entstehung von Bakterien berichteten. Alle diese Angaben ließen sich aber nicht erfolgreich nachprüfen und verloren daher rasch jedes ernsthafte Interesse.
