Zusammenfassung
Die stürmische, von Erfolg zu Erfolg fortschreitende Entwicklung der Lehre von den belebten Krankheitserregern mußte, wie sie auf das gesamte medizinische Wissen und Denken umgestaltend wirkte, alsbald auch auf das Problem der Ätiologie der Geschwülste, insbesondere der carcinomatösen Formen, Einfluß nehmen. Analogien, welche die Pathologen des vorigen Jahrhunderts zwischen gewissen Infektionskrankheiten (Tuberkulose) und malignen Tumoren zu erkennen glaubten, ließen die Existenz eines spezifischen „Krebsmikroben“ als glaubwürdig erscheinen und gaben den Impuls, seinen Nachweis zunächst mit den vielfach bewährten Methoden der Bakteriologie anzustreben. Positive Befunde wurden veröffentlicht, erzielten aber nicht einmal vorübergehende Beachtung, da es sich stets rasch herausstellte, daß es sich um banale Bakterien handelte, die als zufällige Verunreinigungen zu betrachten waren oder auf eine sekundäre Infektion des Tumorparenchyms bezogen werden mußten.
