Zusammenfassung
Unter Tropismen (von τϱ0Лέω = sich wenden) im weiteren Wortsinn versteht man regelmäßige und zwangläufige Lageveränderungen von Lebewesen, welche durch bestimmte exogene Reize ausgelöst werden. Streben die Organismen nach der Stelle hin, von welcher der reizende Einfluß ausgeht, so sind die Tropismen positiv, kehren sie sich ab, so spricht man von negativen Tropismen. Je nach der Natur des die Lageveränderung bedingenden Faktors unterscheidet man einen Phototropismus, Thermotropismus, Geotropismus, Galvanotropismus, Chemotropismus usw. Fast in allen diesen Phänomenen vermögen wir zweckmäßige Einrichtungen zu erblicken, welche der Erhaltung der Arten in der Natur dienen: sie können nur durch allmähliche Anpassung an die Umwelt entstanden sein und ihr zwangläufiger Charakter ist die Endphase dieses Anpassungsprozesses.
