Abstract
A natural resistance or immunity to certain viruses exists in various plants, although the reasons underlying this resistance are not knowno The Colombian variety of tobacco known as Ambalema is resistant to, not immune from, the virus of to bacco mosaic (Nicotiana Virus I). As a general rule when large plants of this variety are inoculated with the virus, no appreciable visible symptoms appear on the leaves or suckers of the inoculated plantso If such plants are examined when in a rapidly growing condition, however, a very mild mottling may be observed in the younger leaves of some of the plants (99). Similarly there occur from time to time individual plants of sugar-beet which are resistant to the virus of curly-top (Beta Virus I). It is of interest to find that passage of the two viruses rnentioned above through the respective resistant plants seems to alter the viruses and to produce attenuated strains.
