Abstract

When a tobacco plant has been infected for some time with tobacco mosaic virus (Nicotiana Virus I) it frequently happens that one or more isolated yellow spots may develop on a leaf. Now, if a sub-inoculation is made from this yellow spot, by pricking through it to a healthy leaf held underneath it for example, then a disease of a different type from the original mosaic disease is produced in the plant thus inoculated. This “yellow mosaic” is of constant character and the virus causing it retains most of the characteristics of the original or type virus but differs in its symptomatology (see Fig. I).
