Abstract
The old definition of a virus as an agent which would pass through the pores of a filter has little meaning at the present time when membrane filters can be made at will either to hold back or allow to pass any virus, according to the respective diameters. of the virus particle and the pore of the membrane. So far as filters of the Pasteur-Chamberland candle type are concerned, it is true that many plant viruses will pass through these, but the adsorption of virus in the thick walls of the candle is very great. The inability of some plant viruses to pass this type of candle, even when of the coarsest grade, is probably largely due to adsorption.
