Abstract

In recent years we have gained considerable knowledge of the way in which the genetic information stored in DNA1 is transmitted to the protein making machinery of the cell, so that a specific nucleotide sequence in DNA gives rise to a unique amino acid sequence in the polypeptide chains of proteins. RNA participates in this process as a messenger between the DNA and the protein. DNA directs the synthesis of a specific messenger RNA (mRNA) and this in turn directs the synthesis of a specific protein.

Based in part on a lecture delivered at the 16th annual meeting of Nobel Prize winners in Lindau, June 30, 1966. For literature prior to 1964 the readen is referred to several reviews (Lipmann, 1963; Crick 1963; Benett and Dreyer, 1964; Watson, 1964; Ochoa, 1964) and to J. D. Watson’s recent book (1965).
