Abstract
A notion which has over the last decades developed into a central concept in the study of knowledge is the concept of context. It is a recurrent theme, not only in the processing of texts but equally well in discussions of perception [Dember], art [Chipp] and science. The problems to which it leads are so intricate that a pioneer in the study of context, the late Bar-Hillel, has declared that it will take centuries of work to arrive at a solution. But as the complexity of the problem cannot be an excuse for leaving it intouched, we will make an attempt to clarify the issue with respect to the study of science and scientific discovery using the apparently more simple case of object perception.
