Zusammenfassung

1946 wurde die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO = World Health Organisation) gegründet. Ihre Verfassung enthält eine Definition des Begriffes „Gesundheit“. Diese wird erklärt als „völlig physisches, geistiges und soziales Wohlbefinden und nicht nur die Abwesenheit von Krankheit oder Gebrechlichkeit“. Das ist ein hohes, politisches Ziel, in absehbarer Zeit kaum erreichbar. Bis vor kurzem begnügte man sich mit dem Versuch, Krankheiten zu heilen oder wenigstens ihre Symptome zu mildern. Erst in neuerer Zeit bemüht man sich, Krankheiten vorzubeugen. Der römische Mediziner Galenus hatte schon vor 1800 Jahren erklärt:„ Da ... die Gesundheit vor der Krankheit kommt, müssen wir wohl zuerst darauf schauen, wie man sie bewahren kann, und erst in zweiter Linie, wie man die Krankheit am besten ausheilen kann“ (1).
