Zusammenfassung

Der Hirnabsceß ist eine umschriebene entzündliche Erkrankung des Gehirns, bei der es durch die Wirkung pathogener Mikroorganismen zur Einschmelzung und Verflüssigung der Hirnsubstanz, zur Bildung einer eitergefüllten Höhle kommt. Der Hirnabsceß ist somit der Endzustand einer circumscripten eitrigen Encephalitis (Encephalitis purulenta seu suppurativa). Während sich der eitrige Prozeß beim extraduralen Absceß (Pachymeningitis externa purulenta) auf der Dura und beim subduralen Absceß (Meningoencephalitis purulenta circumscripta) unterhalb der Dura abspielt, liegt der Hirnabsceß innerhalb der Hirnsubstanz selbst.
