Abstract
A relay is a device for opening and/or closing electrical circuits by means of contacts attached to it. The relay is basically an electromagnet whose magnetic circuit is built up of a core, a yoke and a pivoted armature. A coil of one or more windings is placed round the core. The number of windings which can be placed on the core depends on the number of available terminals. This varies in the various designs from 2 to 6. Sometimes one terminal can be used as the common point of more than one winding, e. g. when the same voltage, or earth, can be used for several windings. Fig. 1 shows an example of a relay with 5 terminals and 3 windings.
