Abstract
Instrumented Comets—Astronautics of Solar and Planetary Probes. A study of instrumented comets is presented for the purpose of analysing the aspects of interplanetary research by unmanned vehicles. The technical, scientific, political and cultural significance of interplanetary research is stressed and consideration of an International Astronautical Decade proposed. The basic performance data and the possibilities of gravitational navigation by close encounter with the Moon, Venus or Mars are analyzed. A discussion of accuracy requirements, both from the flight mechanical and the mission point of view, follows. The flight mechanics of the lunar probe is discussed, the need for 4-body treatment shown, and examples of orbits under 4-body conditions given, including lunar encounter for hyperbolic departure. Orbits involving close encounter between the artificial comet and Venus, Mars and Jupiter are presented and evaluated. A classification of unmanned space vehicle systems is proposed. A number of instrumented comet systems is investigated and specific mission proposals made, such as the exploration of interplanetary plasma characteristics by solar-triggered thermonuclear probes and the study of natural comets by thermonuclear probes or inflated tracer bodies. A radiation-propelled space probe is suggested which can be used as tracer body for the exploration of interplanetary dust or as a paylpad-carrying space probe.
